Visit Hikkaduwa Tourist Village, Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, Ambalangoda Mask Factory, Mirissa, Old Dutch Fortress in Galle and discovering Galle Fort, and the mini city inside.
On the beach about 2 kms north of Hikkaduwa is a very small private Turtle Research Center, which works to protect this endangered species. Turtle eggs selected for hatching & progressive stages of the development of turtles can be seen here.
Galle, the beautiful capital of the Southern Province, boasts of a long history stretching back centuries, even before the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial days. The Galle Fort is the best preserved and most intact fortified city built by the former European colonial powers in Asia. It was declared an archeological reserve by the UN since 1969. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The narrow streets of Galle are lined with Dutch merchant villas, pillared verandahs, carved doors and windows. It is a living heritage city with residents walking the old ramparts at sunset.
Bundala National Park is located 251 km southeast of Colombo, close to the City of Hambantota in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The park contains 05 brackish water lagoons, Bundala being the best known and the best place to creep to watch elephants frolicking at dusk is the nearby tank called “Kokara”, advice caution as the elephants found at Bundala is a little more aggressive due to human-elephant conflict in the area. Area is home to many plant species along with mammals, reptiles and butterflies. The sleepy little hamlet within the sanctuary is the best place to locate yourself to observe wildlife after dusk.
Yala National Park has one of the highest densities of wildlife per square kilometer on the island; it is often described as the finest safari destination in Sri Lanka (a country of immense biodiversity). The park is home to a vast variety of wildlife that each and every day presents new and exciting interactions.
Victoria Park is old, as in extremely old. It was initially the research field for the Hakgala Botanical Garden, but was renamed after Queen Victoria in 1897. It covers a pretty large area spanning over 25 acres. The park is open year-round but the best times to visit it is during the flowering seasons from March to May and August to September. Originally the park was used as the research field of Haggala Botanical Garden which is located about 04 km away from the city centre.
The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage established in 1975 as place for shelter and care the wounded elephants and abandoned baby elephants found in jungle. It is currently home to a herd of over 90 elephants. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the best place for an up close and personal experience with the world’s largest land mammals! Today, Pinnawala has become the home to the largest captive group of elephants in the world.
