Habarana is a small city in the Anuradhapura District of Sri Lanka. Habarana is a popular tourist destination for safari lovers as it is the starting point for safaris in the nearby Habarana jungle and the Minneriya sanctuary which is heavily populated by elephants. Elephant back riding is also an attraction in this small city. Habarana is situated nearby to the Eighth Wonder of The World Sigiriya and is situated on the main road from Colombo to Trincomalee & Polonnaruwa. The population of the city is expected to be in the area of 5000-10,000.
Sigiriya also known as the Lions Rock is a rock fortress and a palace located in the Matale district near Dambulla. This ruin is surrounded by gardens, ponds and other structures. Sigiriya was built by King Kassapa and it is included as a World Heritage site. Sigiriya is the best preserved city centre in Asia.
Sigiriya mainly consist of a palace created on the summit of the rock, the terrace with the lion gate, mirror wall with beautiful frescoes, the moats and of course the beautiful gardens at the base of the rock.
Many remains of Sigiriya still seem to surprise archaeologists, antiquarians and travelers about the creativity and knowledge of its builders. For instance, the cisterns dug into the rock in the summit still retain water. The gardens, moats and walls surrounding the base of the rock are also picturesque and astounding.
Then afternoon we decide to hike Sigiriya Lions Rock.
To reach the top of Sigiriya, you will need to climb 1200 steps. Even though it sounds daunting it is not that hard. We saw many older people doing it, and there are many places to stop and catch your breath.
Overnight stay at Sigiriya or Habarana.
Start the journey to reach Polonnaruwa ancient city and then the afternoon Safari in Minneriya National Park.
Polonnaruwa was the thriving commercial and religious centre of Sri Lanka some 800 years ago. It is the Islands 2nd largest kingdom. It consists of a lot of temples and religious buildings. For three centuries it was the royal capital, of both the Chola and Sinhalese kingdoms. In Polonnaruwa, it all started in the late 10th century when the South Indian Chola dynasty had conquered Sri Lanka.
Next we reach to Minneriya National Park.
Minneriya National Park is located 182 km away from Colombo in the North Central Plains of Sri Lanka. The major city closest to Minneriya National Park is Polonnaruwa.
Minneriya National Park has recorded over 170 species of birds. From Migrating waders like Wood sand Piper, Common Sandpiper & Kentish Plovers to forest birds like Malabar-pied Hornbills, Rufus Woodpecker the globally endangered Lesser Adjutant and the endemics Sri Lanka Grey Horn-bill, Sri Lanka Green Pigeon, Brown-capped Babbler and Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl are some of the highlights.
The fourth day, start the journey to reach Kandy. Kandy city is a master piece of scenic beauty it still has its majestic appearance of being the last capital of Sri Lanka. The ruins of the Kings palace are still one of its prestigious land marks of the citys ancient history.
While reaching Kandy, we plan to visit Dambulla Temple. Dambulla is the one of the ancient historic emblems in Ceylon. The Rock Temple of Dambulla, called Jambukola Vihara (Dambulla Cave Temple) in the (Mahavansa)-the principal Pali Chronicle of Sri Lanka, is situated about forty seven miles north west of Kandy, the last capital of the Sinhalese kings, on the main road to Anuradhapura
The Dambulla temple has five caves and 157 statues of the Lord Buddha, many paintings on the ceilings and walls that emphasis the artistic talent of ancient days. The fascination of these caves is not only the statues but also the many intricate and delicate paintings that cover the ceiling and walls, created with indigenous traditional paints.
In the evening we can visit Temple of The Tooth (Dalada Malaigawa) and overnight stay at Kandy. Sri Dalada Maligawa or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist shrine. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times. Both Kandy and the temple (as it is in it) are now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Next day morning you will visit to Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya, near Kandy, Sri Lanka, noted for its rich and varied collections of tropical woody plants. Occupying 59 hectares (146 acres), it has about 4,000 species of plants. King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne and kept court in Peradeniya near Mahaweli Ganga. During the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe from 1747 to 1780, it was made a royal garden, and from 1780 to 1798 King Rajadhi Rajasinghe resided there and a temporary residence was constructed for him.
And then you will reach to Nuwara Eliya Explore tea hills. Nuwara Eliya is better known as Little England of Sri Lanka. The climate, surroundings, and architecture of this area are different than other villages. Due to its cooler climate, it is the most important area for tea production in Sri Lanka. So it is also known as heart of the tea industry. Exploring tea plantations is not the only thing to do in Nuwara Eliya. Nuwara Eliya offers many activities for tourists including visits to tea plantations golfing, horse riding, boating, hiking and of course exploring the beauty of the landscaped gardens, waterfalls and plateaus.
Over night stay at Nuwara Eliya.
Next day morning you will visit around Nuwara Eliya and back to airport.
